Sharing Folders or Printers or Drives
- Sharing files, folders and other devices are the things that make working with networks important and necessary. There are some tricks you can apply to sharing that information on the system. Folder sharing can be accomplished through a series of simple steps.
  
  In Windows 7, go to Start and select "Computer," then find the file or folder you want to share and select it. Right-click the item and select "Properties," and go to the Sharing tab. Click the Share link. Click "Add..."; here you can select the people to share, like Everyone or Administrator, then click "Share."
  
  To share a printer or a disk drive, follow the same process.
Troubleshooting Computer Network Connections with Ping
- One of the most frequent problems that occur on a network is determining if you are indeed on that network. If you are just joining a network for the first time, you will see a prompt to either join a domain or a workgroup. However, if you are already on a network and now you cannot connect to other computers or devices, you must determine if such a connection is possible.
  
  Open up the command window by going to Start-> Run -> type "cmd" and press "Enter." A black window will appear; that is the command window. Type "ipconfig /all" and press "Enter"; this gives you information about your network configuration. The network information for the computer is available, like the IP address, the gateway address and the DNS address. (These may have an appearance like 19.51.12.66.) Now, to determine if your network connection exists, type "ping" and the DNS address. If you get four replies, then you have a network connection; if not, you have problems with your network connection.
Computer File Types
- One of the most obvious and relevant pieces of information is the name of objects. Specifically, files and folders each have names (obviously), but files also have extensions. These are three-letter combinations following the period; for example, Word.exe. Word is the file name and exe is the type of file. The extension identifies the family of files to which the file belongs. Word.txt is not the same as Word.exe. The first is a text file that can contain information. The second is an executable which can launch the Word program.
  
  Windows can hide the extensions of files, making it difficult to identify what the file is. To get around that, in Windows 7 and XP, click Start and click "Computer" or "My Computer." At the top menu, go to "Tools." Click "Folder Options," "View" and uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types." You will be able to see the extensions.
